Wordless Wednesday Slumber Party

These pictures are from my great aunt Latisha Vanderpool's photo album. These four pictures seem to be related. The bottom picture above looks like they are all sewing something. The wall paper is the same in both pictures.

Looks like the same girls in nite gowns.

Clowning around??

Saturday Night Fun Hobbies

Your mission, should you decide to accept it (cue the Mission Impossible! music) is to:

* Tell us about your "other" hobbies or interests outside of genealogy and family history research, writing, speaking, etc.  Be mindful of your family's privacy, though!

Well I do spend a lot of time doing genealogy, plus all that goes with volunteering at the library, being a Rootsweb administrator for seven mail lists, and keeping up the resource guides for the Washington State Genealogical Society.

In my other life I am still working as an accountant which means a lot of long hours between now and the middle of April. When the weather warms up I like gardening and grow a good sized vegetable  garden. I also planted several fruit trees years ago and we have apples, cherries, plumbs, blackberries, apricots and pears to can each fall. I also like lounging at the lake cabin in the summer, but it does require a lot of work to keep it up.

Saturday Night Fun Semi-Random Research

Your mission, should you decide to accept it (cue the Mission Impossible! music) is to:

1)  We're going to do a little bit of Semi-Random Research tonight...

2)  Go to your family tree database of choice (you know, like RootsMagic, Reunion, Ancestry Member Tree), and determine who the very last person on your list of names is.

3)  What do you know about this person based on your research?  It's OK to do more if you need to - in fact, it's encouraged!

4)  How are you related to this person, and why is s/he in your family tree?

Well the last person in my database may still be alive, so I will not post him here, so I will go to his father three numbers from the end.

This is a picture I received from a cousin and so I did some research to see where he fit in. He is James Ray DeRemer born November 1, 1886 in Minnesota and died March 8, 1954 in Los Angeles, California. He married Una _____ and she was born June 29, 1887 in South Dakota and died April 1975 in Los Angeles, California. They had three children and their last child is the last person in my file.
James is related to my great, great grandfather so we are second cousins one time removed. The DeRemers marrried Dillinghams my grandmothers family and also the Hansens my grandfathers family, so a lot of cousins in common.

Saturday Night Fun Ancestors Alive 100 Years Ago

Your mission, should you decide to accept it (cue the Mission Impossible! music) is to:

1)  Determine where your ancestral families were on 1 January 1913 - 100 years ago.

2)  List them, their family members, their birth years, and their residence location (as close as possible).  Do you have a photograph of their residence from about that time, and does the residence still exist?

Well my mom was not born yet, and her parent were not married yet, but I had 4 grandparents, 4 great grandparents and three great great grandparents alive in January of 1913.

Well my dad Claude Dillingham Hansen was born August 8, 1906 in Sebeka Minnesota and was living on a farm north of Columbus Montana with his mom and dad and two  older sisters and one older brother.

Anton Mikkel Hansen was born July 10, 1870 in Denmark, and besides the farm he ran the grain elevator in Columbus. Anna M. Dillingham was born June 11, 1872 in Minnesota. I do have a picture of the family at the farm a couple of years later after the last son was born. I also have a picture of Anton at his desk at the grain elevator. The farmhouse is still there.

Stanislaus Potoski Dillingham born August 8, 1835 in Maine and his wife Eliza Minerva Hellenbolt born in Wisconsin March 1, 1845. These were the parents of Anna Dillingham and they lived at Crystal Lake, Illinois with their daughter Fredelene Dillingham. I do have a real poor picture of them about that old.

My other grandparents got married August 16, 1913, so lets start with my grandfather Charles Rupert Kelly born August 28, 1890 at Trenton Missouri and he was still living there in 1913. His father  Robert Forsyth Kelly was born in Illinois July 23, 1855 and he lived in Trenton then also. His wife Vada Belle Hert had just passed away October 8, 1912. Vada's mom Sadie Jane Selsor born March 19, 1832 was still living in Harrison County Missouri. I have very few pictures of anyone from Missouri.

My Grandmother Cleo Travis was born August 8, 1890 at Mill Grove Missouri and was living in Trenton in 1913. Notice her birth date and my grandfathers, as he joked about marrying an older woman. Her father Orville Travis born in 1864 in Illinois, living in Spickard Missouri in 1913. his first wife Dona Vanderpool had died in 1900 just after birth of child number seven. He remarried and had ten more kids. Orville's mom Mary Elizabeth Travis born September 10, 1833 in New York and living in Mill Grove Missouri in 1913. Dona's father Joseph Vanderpool born about 1831 in Tennessee. I think he was still in Spickard in 1913.  I do have some pictures of Mill Grove, Spickard and Trenton Missouri taken a few years ago when we visited the area.

Wordless Wednesday CRI& P Boxcar

This is a photo from the album of my great Aunt Latisha Vanderpool. The CRI&P is the Chicago, Rock Island Rail Road. My Grandfather worked for the Rock Island for a while when he lived in Missouri. Not sure who the lady is or where the picture was taken, but it may be Latisha.
