Carnival of Genealogy Reading
Well I do come from a family of readers, my dad and his family gave each other books for presents for birthdays, Christmas, etc. The books ranged from Zane Gray to Mark Twain and to non fiction, history and travel books of all kinds. When I was young they had a wall of bookcases all filled with books, and if you opened any of them they would say to mom or pop or one of the kids from whoever had given the book. After pops parents died he asked for one of the three bookcases they had, and it is sitting right across the room from me now as a remembrance of my grandparents.
Moms family did read, but all I remember was magazines and newspapers. Grandma had her Betty Crocker cookbook which I now have and she also collected recipes from all her friends at church, I have a big sack full of those recipes. Mom did read a lot of magazines and she also had a Betty Crocker cookbook a lot newer than her mom did, and I have that also. Grandma was the one person that read the bible regularly, as our family was not real religious nor was pops family.
My dad loved to read, and he read almost everything he could get his hands on when I remember him. When he was young he had a lot of problems reading, he got real bad headaches when he read for very long and it was years before they found out he needed glasses, he was very farsighted, could see for miles (and read the eye chart easily), but close up was real bad and that is what caused his headaches. For a person that never finished high school he read so much I think he might have been able to graduate from college. He did read the newspaper every day and magazines of all types.
One of the suggestions was did we have comic books as a child, yes we did, and there is a funny story about that also. When my sister was real young mom and pop went on a trip and they bought several comic books for my sister, she would look at the pictures on the page and then tear out the page and throw it out the window of the car. I was an early learner and read a lot of books, but my tastes were mainly non fiction, I never really liked fiction much, seemed like it was easy to figure out the ending. I have not read many books lately, do browse a lot of genealogy books, and I do read a lot of magazines and of course the newspaper every day

Lilac Festival 1966
Today starts the 2012 Lilac Festival, and I found a bunch of old slides and these three below are from the 1966 Lilac Parade. The Lilac Festival actually had three parades in 1966, but today only two. The first day was and is the Junior Lilac Parade, the junior high schools all marched in that parade, I did twice I think, have not found any pictures of that yet. Mom had a movie camera then, so I bet it is on one of the 8mm films I have. One year after the parade we were given tickets to Nat Park a amusement park on the west side of Spokane near the river. They gave us several tickets for rides and a ticket for a hot dog and soda. So after the parade was over the bus dropped us at Nat Park, and they took our instruments back to Shaw Junior High School. We had a good time, but then when we got done with the tickets and the hot dog a couple of us decided to head for home. The bus ran pretty close, but since I had the band uniform I had forgot to put any money in my pocket, so I started to walk, but it was about 5 or 6 miles home from Nat Park. We finally came to a bus stop and my friend loaned me a dime and so we took the bus home.
Here is the Piretts along with the banner for John Rogers High School.
Here is the John Rogers marching band.
Here I am in my band uniform, they were wool and very hot on a warm day, but nice and warm when we played for a football game.

52 Weeks of Abundant Genealogy Blog Series
Week #19 – Blog Series
Week 19: Blog Series: For which blog series are you most thankful? Who writes the series and how has it helped your genealogy blogging experience? Be sure to include a link to the series so others can join in the fun. While the obvious choices would be like Randy Seaver or Dick Eastman, I will pick the Carnival of Genealogy hosted by Jasia. Since Jasia does not write most of the articles she just hosts the articles on her own blog Creativegene.
How has it helped me be a better blogger? Well I have entered 29 of the Carnivals since I started my blog and has helped me learn how to be a blogger. Also the 2010 Carnival of Genealogy on Scrap Booking has been consistently the most popular blog article on my blog.

EXPO 74 Season Pass
I don't remember how much I paid for the EXPO 74 Season Pass, but I had one and really did not use it a lot. I don't remember what I did with it when EXPO was over, so this is my grandmothers Season Pass. Her picture is on the other side. EXPO 74 started May 4, 1974 with a big ceremony and lots of politicians thanking everyone for this wonderful EXPO 74.

Wordless Wednesday EXPO 74
Well this Friday will be 38 years since the opening of EXPO 74 May 4, 1974 here in Spokane, Washington. Wished I had more pictures, but it looks like we did not take many or else I have not found them yet. Notice the large butterfly at one of the entrances to the EXPO grounds.
